“Dad-jay?” Carey was in a girly phase now, ribbons and pink and everything else, never mind what current fashion said. “What were you talking to Aunt Kai about the other day?”
“I didn't know you were listening, kiddo.” He was cooking, which gave him an excuse not to look at his child, but he was having a harder time controlling his voice than any self-respecting Daeva ought to.
“I do that.” She tapped his side until he looked at her, and grinned. It was an expression disturbingly like her father, Ty. “I'm the quiet one, remember?”
“Hard to forget, short stuff. So, ah.” Dinner was at a stir-occasionally point; he leaned against the counter and looked down at her. “You remember what you've learned about the fae?”
